London based cycling brand Rapha, has been well established in the cycling world for the past 10 years, and is best known for their technical racing kit. However, in many ways they also pioneered the concept of an urban cycle clothing range.
A few years ago, the brand started to release clothing for cyclists, who want all the functionality of cycle clothing but with less of a cycling look (aka lycra), so you could wear it in the office, cafe, or pub comfortably.
The collection is full of classic pieces in the luxury textiles that have come to define the brand. Each piece can be worn both on and off the bike, and can truly take the wearer from day to night to bike.
I was lucky enough to be given a few pieces from the collection to try out and have to admit was surprised by just how quickly they have become my everyday staples. Here are the details on some of The Locals favourites.
The Women’s Classic T-shirt
Hands down this is my favourite. Made from merino wool, it functions well in a wide range of temperatures, wicks moisture away, oh and will remain odour-free. So if you cycle into work, you don’t have to worry about needing to change the minute you get to the office. I honestly love these shirts so much, that I have since gone and bought one in every colourway and am pretty sure I will never cycle in a cotton shirt again.
Women’s Sleeveless Shirt
But lets face it, you can’t always get away with a t-shirt at work. Which is where the sleeveless shirt comes in. This classic button up sleeveless shirt, features a slim collar and covered front placket making it perfect for those days you need to look a little dressier. With its merino wool back, dropped tail and perspiration catching panel at the nape of the neck – the attention to detail and functionality of the garment on the bike is evident throughout.
Women’s Jeans
For years the cycling jean market has had very little to offer women, so it is great to see Rapha step up and fill this gap. The high stretch denim is milled with nylon for durability. They also have high vis piping and a reflective Rapha logo in the cuff of the left leg, so when rolled up offer greater visibility to keep you safe. I have worn them cycling in the rain a few times now (I live in London after all) and was really impressed by how fast drying they are. Hooray – no more sitting at work in soggy clothes all day!
Women’s Lightweight Bomber Jacket
This is another item I have been wearing almost everyday. This packable jacket is durable, water-resistant, windproof and quick drying – making it perfect to throw in a bag and pull out when needed. Like many Rapha jackets, it has a hidden rain tail, that prevents you from getting any spray from unexpected showers up your backside. I have found this perfect for morning commutes and evening rides over the past two weeks.
Finally, as a part of the collection, they have also released a selection of silk scarves with illustrations from renowned designer Barbara Agnes, they are great for everyday wear and are a nice finishing touch to any outfit.
Overall the collection is perfect for all urban cyclists, from those who enjoy the causal ride down to the market, to everyday commuters.
